William Henry Emerson Fellowship In Chemistry
Mr. Cherry Emerson, a great friend of the Institute, has made a generous gift which provides an endowment to support graduate a fellowship program named to honor his grandfather, William Henry “Big Doc” of Tunnel Hill, Georgia. “Big Doc“ Emerson graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University. He came to Georgia Tech in 1888 as the very first professor of chemistry. In 1910, Emerson became Tech’s Dean of Faculty. Throughout his 36-year career at Tech, he was a an inspirational teacher, scientist and administrator.
The Emerson Fellowships in Chemistry and Biochemistry are awarded to the best-of-the-best: New graduate students who have demonstrated superior scholarship, and whose research interests match those of the School. The program is designed to provide them with the new experiences that will prepare them for leadership in the science-driven, technology-rich 21st century.
