The instruments are divided into two scheduling groups:
- The Avance IIIHD 800, Avance IIIHD 700, Avance IIIHD 500 (Prodigy probe), Avance IIIHD 500 (solutions and solids), Avance III 400, Mercury 400 and Mercury 300 are available to all individuals who have been trained. Access is first-come, first-served on a weekly basis by using an internet access time sheet: Internet Scheduling
- Time on the Avance III 400 Solids and Avance IIIHD 300 Solids is coordinated by Dr. Leisen by accessing his web page .
The Center Manager reserves time for user training, instrument maintenance, and operator-acquired spectra. There are a number of work stations in the Center for dedicated offline data processing.Instrument Availability Varian Mercury 400 and Varian Mercury 300
These instruments are available to all trained users on a first-come first-use sign-up. Do to the high demand for this instrument the following sign-up rules are in force.
Between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Friday up to 30 minutes can be reserved at any one time. More that one 30 minute time slot can be reserved but cannot be put back to back to give the user one hour of time.
Between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM one hour maximum time.
Monday through Friday from 10:00 PM until 8:00 AM the next morning and from Friday at 10:00 PM until Monday at 8:00 AM the instrument can be reserved for an unlimited amount of time.
The time between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM Monday through Friday cannot be reserved. This time is available for single proton spectra on a first-come first-served basis. If no one is waiting to use the instrument more samples can be run. However, after your first sample is run if someone should show up you must give up the instrument and get to the end of the line.Bruker Instruments These instruments are available to all trained users on a first-come first-use sign-up. Do to the high demand for this instrument the following sign-up rules are in force.
Between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM Monday through Friday up to three hours can be reserved at any one time. More than one 3 hour time slot can be reserved but cannot be put back to back to give the user more than three hours at any one time.
From 10:00 PM Friday until 8:00 AM Monday one can sign up for an unlimited amounts of time.AV-IIIHD 500 with a Prodigy probe
This instrument is specifically reserved for long term 1D and nD experiments. Between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Friday it can be reserved for three hours time slots all other times are unlimited.AV-IIIHD solutions / solids
This instrument is shared between solution and solids NMR experiments during each week. The days for each type of experiments may change from week to week. Please check the reservation page for the dates.
For solutions experiments times between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM Monday through Friday can be reserved for up to three hours. More than one 3 hour time slot can be reserved but cannot be put back to back to give the user more than three hours at any one time.
From 10:00 PM Friday until 8:00 AM Monday one can sign up for an unlimited amount of time.
Avance IIIHD 700 and 800,
These instrrument can be reserved for unlimited amounts of time.Preparation of Solution Samples
The only way to obtain useful data is to have well prepared samples.
Samples of the required material should be dissolved in an appropriate DEUTERATED solvent. The deuterated solvent serves two purposes. First it acts as the lock material and secondly, if you are running a proton spectrum, it reduces the large solvent peak.
Use an appropriate concentration. This will vary depending on the instrument so please contact the lab manager for question about the concentration for any specific instrument and nucleus.
Solutions samples should be just that, solutions. There should be no particulate matter in the NMR tube. If necessary filter your samples. Gel like samples will be difficult to shim and give very broad lines.
